The NEW Smith Street Music + Arts Festival

Sunday June 23rd 2024 12 noon - 9PM

Smith St. Between Bergen and Union

The Smith Street Alliance, a BID formation effort, and the South Brooklyn Local Development Corporation, SBLDC, have joined forces to reinvent the yearly street fair held on Smith Street in Brooklyn on a Sunday late in June.

Moving away from a model that brings in outside vendors to create a shopping and eating experience, the groups have decided to evolve away from that and create an event that supports the local businesses. Smith Street restaurants will extend their seating outside their establishments, replacing the food trucks that commonly participate. Live Music and a Mini Circus will offer free activities for everyone to enjoy. Outside vendors will participate but will be focused on the Arts, Crafts and small Brooklyn makers. Additional seating and open spaces will create areas for neighbors to connect, play and enjoy the day together.

A statement from the group:

“Supporting our local retailers and creating a community building event will be the main focus. We have had experience producing street events in that past, such as Make Music Cobble Hill in 2018 and 2019, and  a 6 week version of Open Streets in 2022 on Smith St. Noting the difference between these less commercial events and what has become the standard, convinced us that a big change was needed. Creating something new and fun has had its challenges but we believe that the results will be worth it. ”

The group received generous support from Council Member Shahana Hanif, Freestone Property Group and Greenbrook Partners. Production assistance from Clearview Events.

April 2022 - Court Smith Bid effort becomes Smith Street BID formation effort

After a seven year long effort to establish a Business Improvement District (BID) for the Court-Smith economic corridor, we are redirecting our efforts. Although we had staunch support from many members in the community, both business and residential, we also had a vocal minority on Court Street who adamantly opposed the BID and because a successful BID needs strong support we found it necessary to change our focus.

We look, however, at the aftermath of the pandemic on Smith Street, the dirty sidewalks, shuttered storefronts, struggling proprietors, and overflowing garbage cans, and recognize the need for a BID is stronger now than ever. That is why we are turning, with renewed determination and inspiration, to establishing a BID solely for Smith Street.

Our primary objective in establishing a Smith Street BID is to:

  • Support local businesses through marketing and events that bring more visitors and shoppers to the neighborhood.

  • Cleaner greener streets

  • Building a retailer network that informs the BID effort, and giving the corridor a stronger voice with the city's administration.

  • We seek to build a livelier more connected residential community through these efforts.

We thank you for your past support of the Court-Smith BID effort and look forward to seeing you in the neighborhood. Stay tuned for updates from the NEW Smith Street BID formation effort
